If you opened your own business, what would it be?
I feel so grateful that I took multiple risks to open all of my own businesses and am now (officially) on my own sustaining and growing them. My favorite creation as of late is through my business Brand Launch; we’ve developed a platform that connects local community advocates + champions with businesses to get them buzz through social media storytelling and posting. We call these community champions “hummingbirds” and our vision is to see one million hummingbirds in the US, advocating for all things local by leveraging their social media platforms. It all starts in Des Moines, though!
What advice would you give your younger self?
Follow the breadcrumbs of your curiosities. I oftentimes didn’t because they were “weird” or I was worried what others would think.
I’m incredibly enthusiastic, which has created impact and influence in the work I do because so many people struggle to light their own fires. Feeling other people’s positivity and energy can create hope and inspiration, so every single thing I do and create is about showing up and sharing that enthusiasm. I also have the ability to see or create a big vision and all of the pieces needed for execution.
What makes you feel fulfilled?
Knowing that my words, relationships, time, presence, and dollars are making an impact.
When asked to describe yourself, what’s the first word that pops into your mind?
A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller — it inspired me to bike across America in 2012, which changed everything I believed about myself and what I was capable of.
What makes your heart race?
Public speaking; I love and hate so many elements of it.
Organization or cause near to your heart
The Water Ride — this is a bike ride I created in partnership with The Move Project in 2012 to help raise money for clean water. Once we helped a community in Ghana get clean water, we expanded to building a school and hiring teachers. It is one of the most amazing projects I get to be a part of!
What keeps you up at night?
Not getting everything done as quickly as I’d like to. From small tasks to big dreams, I find that I’m “kicking myself” for not doing or being more. It doesn’t keep me up at night in the sense that it’s a daily struggle, but it is something I find myself thinking about more than anything else that challenges me.
What is a belief you once held but no longer do?
I had no idea how powerful our thoughts are. I always kind of operated with the whole “this is just who I am thing,” but then I started reading to tons of self-help books and hundreds of podcasts and I realized that every single experience, I get to choose my thoughts about it, positive or negative or neutral. That has served me well.
What are you interested in connecting with other women about?
I love connecting with women who are intentional about how they spend their time and life on the planet. I enjoy talking about business (a lot), health, minimalism, Des Moines, and anything in woo-woo land.
